Rifaxamine 400 mg is a broad-spectrum, non-systemic antibiotic used primarily to treat gastrointestinal infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis, thereby stopping the growth of certain bacteria in the gut. Because Rifaxamine is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream, it acts locally in the intestines with minimal systemic effects.
This medicine is especially beneficial in treating Traveler’s Diarrhea caused by non-invasive strains of Escherichia coli. It is also widely used to manage symptoms of IBS-D (Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea) and to prevent hepatic encephalopathy in patients with chronic liver disease by reducing ammonia-producing bacteria.
